This topic is one of the most common in quantitative sections. Questions ask you to find profit percentage when the cost or selling price changes, compare the cost of some articles with the selling price of others, and work out how many items must be sold per rupee to gain a target profit. You will also see discount and marked price questions, data sufficiency items, and mixtures of two goods sold at a common rate. A useful case is when doubling the selling price triples the profit, which means the profit was 100% of cost. Always calculate profit percentage on cost price.

Profit and loss percentages are calculated on the cost price unless a question says otherwise. Profit percentage equals profit divided by cost price, multiplied by 100. Discount, by contrast, is calculated on the marked price, which is a common source of mistakes in exam questions.
The profit percentage is 100%. Let cost be C and profit P, so selling price is C plus P. Doubling it gives 2C plus 2P, which equals C plus 3P. Solving gives P equal to C, so the profit is equal to the cost price.
