About Urdu MCQs

This subject is split into six topics. Urdu Grammar (اردو قواعد) covers the parts of speech, tenses, sentence types, the alphabet and figures of speech such as simile (تشبیہ) and metaphor (استعارہ). Mutradif and Mutazad covers synonyms (مترادف) and antonyms (متضاد). Wahid Jama and Muzakkar Muannas covers singular and plural forms (واحد جمع) and masculine and feminine forms (مذکر مؤنث). Muhavarat and Zarb-ul-Amsal covers idioms (محاورات) and proverbs (ضرب الامثال), including fill-in-the-blank sentences.

The two literature topics cover Urdu Poets and Poetry, from Mir, Ghalib and Iqbal to Faiz, Parveen Shakir and Habib Jalib, and Urdu Writers and Books, covering novels, short stories, humour, travelogues, autobiographies and the classic prose of Fort William College. Language topics reward steady vocabulary practice, while literature topics are mostly about matching authors with their works, pen names and literary movements.

How to prepare for Urdu MCQs

  1. Practise the language topics (grammar, synonyms, plurals and idioms) a little every day, because they depend on vocabulary that builds up over time.
  2. For literature, keep a table of each poet or writer with their real name, pen name (تخلص), main books and literary movement.
  3. Learn the Arabic broken plurals together, such as lafz and alfaz (لفظ، الفاظ) or masla and masail (مسئلہ، مسائل), since examiners use them often.
  4. Read idioms in a full sentence rather than alone, as many questions ask you to fill a blank with the right muhavara.
