About Boats and Streams MCQs

Boats and Streams is a branch of speed, time and distance. If a boat's speed in still water is u and the stream's speed is v, the downstream speed is u + v and the upstream speed is u minus v. Questions ask you to find the still water speed, the stream speed, the time for a journey, or the distance of a round trip completed in a given time. Some problems compare distances covered with and against the stream in equal time. Once the two basic formulas are clear, most questions can be solved in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find the speed of a boat in still water?

Add the downstream and upstream speeds and divide by two. For example, if a boat travels at 24 km/h downstream and 20 km/h upstream, its speed in still water is (24 + 20) ÷ 2 = 22 km/h. The stream speed is (24 minus 20) ÷ 2 = 2 km/h.

Which exams ask Boats and Streams MCQs?

These questions appear in the quantitative sections of NTS, GAT, ISSB and armed forces initial tests in Pakistan, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, IBPS PO, SBI PO and RRB NTPC in India, and BCS and bank job exams in Bangladesh. Campus placement aptitude rounds use them too.
