About Road Problems MCQs

These problems apply the relation distance equals speed multiplied by time to everyday journeys. Questions include a motorcyclist travelling from Karachi to Hyderabad, walking to a station at two speeds and arriving late or early, and races where one runner beats another by time and distance. A common trap is average speed for a return journey: when equal distances are covered at different speeds, the average is the harmonic mean, not the simple average. For example, 50 km/h out and 40 km/h back gives an average of about 44.4 km/h.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find average speed for a round trip?

For equal distances at two speeds, average speed equals 2xy divided by (x + y). A trip at 50 km/h one way and 40 km/h back gives 2 x 50 x 40 divided by 90, about 44.4 km/h. Simply averaging 50 and 40 would give the wrong answer of 45.

How do I solve late and early arrival questions?

Find the time difference between the two cases by adding the minutes late and early, then convert to hours. Set the difference of distance divided by each speed equal to that time and solve for distance. For example, 2 minutes late and 3 minutes early gives a total gap of 5 minutes.
