This Aptitude topic relies on a few fixed facts. The minute hand moves 6 degrees per minute and the hour hand moves half a degree per minute, so the minute hand gains 5.5 degrees each minute. The angle between the hands at H hours and M minutes is the difference between 30H and 5.5M. Questions ask for the angle at a given time, the time when hands coincide or point in opposite directions, how many times in a day the hands are in a straight line, and the true time shown by a watch that gains a few seconds every few minutes.

Use the formula angle = |30H minus 5.5M|, where H is the hour and M the minutes. At 4:20 the angle is |120 minus 110| = 10 degrees. If the answer is more than 180 degrees, subtract it from 360 to get the smaller angle.
