Logarithms are the inverse of powers: if a to the power x equals N, then log of N to base a equals x. Questions in this topic apply the product rule, quotient rule and power rule, change the base of a logarithm, and evaluate expressions such as log 80 using log 2 = 0.3010. Some problems ask for log 10 to base 2, which equals 1 divided by log 2 to base 10. Because many items give approximate values, writing each number as a product of 2, 3, 5 and 10 is usually the quickest route to the answer.

The product rule says log(mn) = log m + log n. The quotient rule says log(m/n) = log m minus log n. The power rule says log(m to the power n) = n log m. Also, log of 1 is zero and the log of the base itself is one.
Write 80 as 8 × 10, which is 2 cubed × 10. Then log 80 = 3 log 2 + log 10 = 3 × 0.3010 + 1 = 1.9030. The same method works for any number that can be broken into powers of 2, 3, 5 and 10.
