This Aptitude topic uses the rule of alligation: the ratio of the cheaper to the dearer quantity equals the dearer price minus the mean price, divided by the mean price minus the cheaper price. Questions ask for mixing ratios of tea, rice or other goods, the price per kg of a mixture made in a given ratio, the price of a third variety when three are mixed, and problems where a grocer sells the mixture at a profit, so the cost price of the mixture must be found first. Removing the profit before applying the rule is a common step that many candidates miss.

The rule of alligation says (quantity of cheaper) ÷ (quantity of dearer) = (dearer price minus mean price) ÷ (mean price minus cheaper price). For example, to get a mean of Rs. 18 from rice at Rs. 15 and Rs. 20, mix them in the ratio 2 : 3.
First find the cost price of the mixture by removing the profit from the selling price. If a mixture sells at Rs. 68.20 with a 10 per cent gain, its cost price is 68.20 ÷ 1.1 = Rs. 62. Then apply the alligation rule using Rs. 62 as the mean.
