This chapter combines human and plant reproduction. Questions ask where fertilisation of the ovum normally occurs, when the second meiotic division of the oocyte is completed, and the function of Sertoli cells in nourishing developing sperm. You will also find items on cloning by nuclear transfer into an enucleated egg, embryonic diapause, the birth canal, follicle cells that nourish the egg, and the evolution of the pollen tube in seed plants. Reproduction is a high-yield chapter in medical entry tests because its facts are precise and frequently examined.

In humans, fertilisation normally occurs in the ampulla of the fallopian tube (oviduct). The sperm meets the secondary oocyte there, and the resulting zygote then travels to the uterus, where it implants in the endometrium as a blastocyst.
The secondary oocyte is arrested at metaphase II at ovulation. The second meiotic division is completed only after a sperm penetrates the oocyte during fertilisation, producing the mature ovum and a second polar body. If fertilisation does not happen, the division is not completed.
