Digestion MCQs

Digestion MCQs are multiple-choice questions on the human digestive system, covering each part of the gut, the digestive glands and their enzymes, absorption and common digestive disorders. Every question on MCQs360 shows the correct answer instantly, so you can confirm what each enzyme and organ does as you revise.

About Digestion MCQs

Questions follow food through the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine, asking about chewing, salivary glands, peristalsis, gastric juice and the formation of chyme. Enzyme questions cover salivary amylase, pepsin, rennin, pancreatic enzymes and the role of hydrochloric acid. The associated glands section tests the liver, gall bladder and pancreas, the action of bile, and hormones such as gastrin, secretin and cholecystokinin. Further questions cover the structure of villi, the absorption of digested food into blood capillaries and lacteals, and disorders such as peptic ulcers, diarrhoea and constipation.

Key facts to remember

  • Salivary amylase begins the digestion of starch in the mouth.
  • Pepsin breaks proteins down into shorter polypeptides in the acidic stomach.
  • Bile is made in the liver and stored in the gall bladder; it emulsifies fats but contains no digestive enzymes.
  • Secretin from the duodenum stimulates the pancreas to release juice rich in hydrogencarbonate.
  • The parotid glands are the largest salivary glands.
  • The bacterium Helicobacter pylori is a major cause of peptic ulcers.

How to prepare for Digestion MCQs

  1. Make a table of digestive enzymes listing where each is made, its substrate, its products and its optimum pH.
  2. Learn the three gut hormones, gastrin, secretin and cholecystokinin, with where they are made and what they do.
  3. Draw a villus and label the blood capillaries and lacteal, noting which products enter each.
  4. Revise the functions of the liver beyond bile, such as storing glycogen and making urea.

Frequently asked questions

Which exams ask Digestion MCQs?

In Pakistan, Digestion questions appear in MDCAT, the NUMS and AKU entry tests and FSc board papers. Students in India meet the same content in NEET, and in Bangladesh it is tested in HSC Biology and the Medical Admission Test.

How does bile help in fat digestion?

Bile salts emulsify fats, breaking large fat droplets into many tiny droplets. This greatly increases the surface area on which pancreatic lipase can act. Bile is also alkaline and helps neutralise acidic chyme entering the duodenum, but it contains no enzymes.

Where is most food absorbed in the human gut?

Most digested food is absorbed in the small intestine, especially the ileum. Its lining is folded into millions of villi and microvilli, giving a very large surface area, and each villus contains blood capillaries and a lacteal to carry absorbed products away.
