About Circulation MCQs

Heart questions cover its chambers, valves, coronary blood supply and the conducting system of the SA node, AV node, bundle of His and Purkinje fibres. Cardiac cycle questions ask about the phases of atrial and ventricular systole and diastole, heart sounds and the length of one cycle at a given heart rate. The blood vessels section compares the structure and function of arteries, veins and capillaries and explains how tissue fluid forms. Other questions deal with blood components and groups, haemolytic disease of the newborn and cardiovascular disorders such as atherosclerosis. The lymphatic system section covers lymph nodes, lacteals, the thoracic duct and lymphoid organs.

Key facts to remember

  • At a heart rate of 75 beats per minute, one cardiac cycle lasts about 0.8 seconds.
  • The sinoatrial (SA) node in the wall of the right atrium acts as the heart's pacemaker.
  • The left ventricle has the thickest wall because it pumps blood around the whole body.
  • The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, and the pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood.
  • The heart muscle receives its own blood supply through the coronary arteries.
  • Lymph from most of the body drains into the blood through the thoracic duct, which joins the left subclavian vein.

How to prepare for Circulation MCQs

  1. Draw the heart with its chambers, valves and major vessels, and trace the path of a red blood cell through it.
  2. Learn the cardiac cycle as a timeline, noting which valves are open or closed in each phase.
  3. Compare arteries, veins and capillaries in a table showing wall thickness, lumen size, valves and pressure.
  4. Revise the exceptions, such as the pulmonary artery and pulmonary veins, as examiners use them in tricky options.

Frequently asked questions

Which exams ask Circulation MCQs?

In Pakistan, Circulation questions appear in MDCAT, the NUMS and AKU entry tests and FSc board papers. Students in India meet the same content in NEET, and in Bangladesh it is tested in HSC Biology and the Medical Admission Test.

Why do veins have valves while arteries do not?

Blood in veins flows at low pressure, so valves are needed to stop it flowing backwards, especially in the limbs where blood returns to the heart against gravity. Arteries carry blood at high pressure from the heart, so backflow is not a problem along their length.

What is the function of the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system returns excess tissue fluid to the blood, absorbs fats from the small intestine through lacteals and helps defend the body. Lymph nodes filter lymph and contain lymphocytes and macrophages that destroy pathogens.
