These items test whether you understand cause, effect and implication in everyday English. Some ask what a sentence really means, such as the meaning of unless in a warning or need not have in a past action. Others give the first half of a statement and ask for the most sensible ending, for example what someone who opposes keeping animals in captivity would avoid. Success depends on reading the whole sentence, noticing connecting words like hence and because, and rejecting options that are grammatically correct but illogical.

Need not have plus a past participle means someone did something that was unnecessary. For example, Mukhtar need not have purchased the bag means he bought it, but there was no need to. It is different from did not need to, which may suggest the action was not done.
Read the full sentence before checking options, and underline linking words such as unless, hence, although and because. Predict a sensible ending yourself, then pick the closest option. Regular reading of newspapers in English also improves your sense of natural sentence flow.
