About Seating Arrangement and Puzzles MCQs

Linear seating questions place five to eight people in a straight row facing north or south, with clues such as "sits third to the right of" and "are immediate neighbours". Circular questions seat people around a table facing the centre, where left and right depend on the direction of facing. Both types ask who sits at a given position or between two people.

Puzzle questions match people with two or more attributes, such as subject studied and home city, or schedule lectures and talks across the days of a week. They are solved with a grid that rules out options clue by clue. These puzzles carry heavy weight in IBPS and SBI reasoning papers and also appear in MDCAT, NTS and SSC exams.

Key facts to remember

  • In a row facing north, a person's right is the viewer's right; in a row facing south, left and right are reversed for the viewer.
  • Around a circular table facing the centre, moving to a person's right is anticlockwise and moving to their left is clockwise.
  • In a circle of n people, sitting kth to the right of someone is the same as sitting (n − k)th to their left.
  • "Immediate neighbours" means sitting directly next to each other, with no one in between.

How to prepare for Seating Arrangement and Puzzles MCQs

  1. Start with the most definite clue, such as a fixed end seat or a fixed day, and build outward.
  2. When a clue allows two cases, draw both and test later clues to eliminate one.
  3. For attribute puzzles, use a grid with people as rows and attributes as columns, marking ticks and crosses.
  4. Re-check the facing direction in every circular question, since outward facing reverses left and right.

Frequently asked questions

How do left and right work in circular seating?

When everyone faces the centre, a person's right is anticlockwise and their left is clockwise as seen from above. If people face outward, this is reversed. Drawing the circle and marking one person's facing direction avoids confusion.

Which exams ask Seating Arrangement and Puzzle MCQs?

Seating and puzzle questions are a major part of IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO and SBI Clerk reasoning papers in India, and appear in SSC and RRB exams. In Pakistan they appear in MDCAT, NTS and GAT tests, and in Bangladesh in BCS and bank recruitment tests.

How can I solve long puzzles faster?

Read all the clues once, then start from the most fixed one. Keep the diagram neat, note possible cases side by side, and eliminate cases as each new clue is applied. Regular practice with timed sets builds the speed needed for bank exams.
