Coding and Decoding MCQs

Coding and Decoding MCQs are multiple-choice questions in which words, letters or sentences are written in a hidden code and you must find the rule and apply it to a new word. Every question on MCQs360 shows its correct answer instantly, so you can verify the rule you found and practise until the common patterns become familiar.

About Coding and Decoding MCQs

Letter coding questions shift each letter forward or backward by a fixed or changing amount, reverse the word, or replace each letter with its opposite in the alphabet. Number coding questions turn letters into their alphabet positions, sums or products, such as coding a word by adding its letter values and multiplying by a fixed number. Some codes mix both methods, so check each letter separately.

Coded sentence questions give three short sentences in a made-up language and ask for the code of one word, found by comparing which code words appear in common. Substitution questions rename objects, such as calling a pen an eraser, and ask what an item is called in the new system. These question types are standard in MDCAT, NTS, SSC and bank exams.

Key facts to remember

  • Alphabet positions run from A = 1 to Z = 26; in the reverse alphabet Z = 1 and A = 26.
  • A letter and its opposite letter add up to 27 in position (A + Z, B + Y, M + N).
  • In coded sentences, a word that appears in two sentences has the code word common to both.
  • In substitution questions, the answer is the new name given to the item, not the item itself.
  • The letters at positions 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 are E, J, O, T and Y, a useful anchor for counting.

How to prepare for Coding and Decoding MCQs

  1. Write the alphabet positions under both the word and its code, then look at the difference letter by letter.
  2. Check for reversal: compare the first letter of the code with the last letter of the word.
  3. For coded sentences, compare two sentences at a time and cross off common words and codes.
  4. Read substitution questions twice and answer with the code name, which is where most mistakes happen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the reverse alphabet rule in coding?

In the reverse alphabet Z is 1 and A is 26. To find a letter's opposite, subtract its position from 27, so A becomes Z, B becomes Y and M becomes N. Many coding questions replace each letter with its opposite in this way.

Which exams ask Coding and Decoding MCQs?

Coding and decoding appears in MDCAT, NTS and GAT tests, ISSB and forces initial tests, and PPSC and FPSC papers in Pakistan, in SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, IBPS, SBI and RRB exams in India, and in the BCS mental ability paper and bank tests in Bangladesh.

How do I find a code word in coded sentence questions?

Compare two sentences that share one English word and find the code word they share. Repeat with other pairs to isolate each code. Elimination usually reveals the answer within two comparisons.
