About Direction Sense MCQs

Route questions describe someone walking a set distance, turning left or right several times and walking again, then ask how far and in which direction they are from the starting point. Rotation questions give a starting direction such as north-east and a series of clockwise and anticlockwise turns in degrees, and ask which way the person faces at the end.

Map questions place points relative to one another and ask for the direction of one from another. Shadow questions use the position of the sun in the morning or evening to work out which way a person is facing. A quick sketch with north at the top solves almost every type, and these questions are common in ISSB, MDCAT, NTS, SSC and bank exams.

Key facts to remember

  • Facing north, a right turn faces east and a left turn faces west; facing south, a right turn faces west.
  • There are 45° between each main direction and the next intermediate direction, such as north and north-east, and 90° between north and east.
  • The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so in the morning shadows fall towards the west and in the evening towards the east.
  • The shortest distance on a right-angled route is found with Pythagoras: distance = √(x² + y²).
  • Turning 180° from any direction faces the opposite direction, so north-east becomes south-west.

How to prepare for Direction Sense MCQs

  1. Draw every route on paper with north at the top, marking each distance as you go.
  2. Add up net east-west and net north-south distances separately, then use Pythagoras for the straight-line distance.
  3. For rotations, convert all turns to a single net clockwise angle before finding the final direction.
  4. Learn common Pythagorean triples such as 3-4-5, 5-12-13 and 8-15-17 to find distances quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the shortest distance in direction questions?

Add the movements in each axis to get the net east-west and north-south distances. If both are non-zero, they form the two shorter sides of a right-angled triangle, so the shortest distance is the square root of the sum of their squares.

Which exams ask Direction Sense MCQs?

Direction sense appears in ISSB and Army, Navy and PAF initial tests, MDCAT, NTS and GAT, and PPSC and FPSC papers in Pakistan, SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, IBPS, SBI and RRB exams in India, and the BCS mental ability paper in Bangladesh.

Which way does a shadow fall in the evening?

In the evening the sun is in the west, so shadows fall towards the east. If a person's shadow falls to their right before sunset, east is on their right, which means they are facing north.
