Why is double buffering used in I/O?

Correct answer D. So a device can fill one buffer while the process empties the other, overlapping I/O with processing

Explanation

With a single buffer, the producer must wait while the consumer empties it. With two, the device writes into one while the application processes the other, and they swap roles, so I/O and computation overlap. Buffering also copes with speed mismatches between devices and with different transfer sizes. It is not a backup method and does not make hardware faster.
