Practice mode Solids

Why does solid NaCl not conduct electricity but molten NaCl does?

Correct answer A. Ions are fixed in the solid lattice but free to move in the melt

Explanation

In the crystal, Na⁺ and Cl⁻ ions are held in fixed positions by strong electrostatic forces. On melting the ions become mobile and can carry current.
